It’s important to note that users can modify or delete items from their In-Place Archives just as they can with their primary mailboxes. In order to prevent users from deleting or modifying messages, Microsoft suggests the use of its In-Place Hold functionality (legal hold). The more expensive E3 and E4 plans provide users with 25 GBs of storage in their primary mailbox, plus unlimited storage in their In-Place Archive.
The cheaper Office 365 plans provide users with 25 GBs of storage, which can be split between their primary mailbox and In-Place Archive. In terms of archiving, Microsoft’s approach is to provide Exchange Online users with an In-Place Archive – secondary mailbox that appears alongside a user’s primary mailbox in Outlook or OWA (Outlook Web App), and gives them a place to store older emails.
